Heartbreaking 6-5 OT loss for San Jose Sharks against Columbus, extended home losing streak to 7

San Jose started the game well. At 6:54 of the 1st period, Alexander Barabanov drew a hooking penalty. On the ensuing power play, Logan Couture got the puck in the left circle and wristed a shot on goal. Goalie made the save but Barabanov backhanded the rebound in the net. After the goal, the Sharks took their foot off the gas a little which changed the momentum towards the Blue Jackets. Just over minutes late, at 12:29 Johnny Gaudreau capitalized on a rebound with a hard shot from the bottom of the left circle and tied the game at 1. After San Jose’s initial goal, Columbus out shot them 12-0. Period ended with the Sharks killing a 5 on 3 penalty.

Second period started with the Sharks killing a 5 on 3 followed by a 5 on 4. San Jose was caught in the zone for a long time when Logan Couture cleared the puck. While the Sharks were changing, Columbus goalies came way out and made a quick pass to Johnny Gaudreau who passed it to Kent Johnson for a shot that trickled in through the 5-hole. At 5:28 of the 2nd period, Boone Jenner scored from the slot on a pass from Johnny Gaudreau from behind the goal line and through 2 San Jose defenders. Five minutes later, William Eklund got a rebound in front of the net and backhanded a shot in the net. With just over 2 minutes left in the 2nd period, Blue Jackets stung again. San Jose turned over the puck in their defensive zone, which led to Boone Jenner getting a shot from the inside of the right circle that ended up in the Sharks net through some screen. In the last second of the period, Logan Couture’s shot changed direction from a stick and ended up in the net making it a one goal game again.

At the start of the 3rd period, Erik Karlsson caught an edge on his skate while back skating which allowed Mathieu Olivier to get the pass across to Liam Foudy on the left and his shot found the back of the Sharks net. Just over 3 minutes later, Kevin Labanc deked a defender, cut from outside to inside in the left circle and wristed a shot to the far side scoring his first goal in almost 2 months. At 11:20 of the 3rd, puck ended up on the tape of Nikolai Knyzhov in the left circle and lasered a wrister to the top shelf on the far side and tied the game at 5.

Both teams had plenty of chances in OT but none better than the 2 on 0 chance that Columbus got with less than a minute left. Kaapo Kahkonen made the impossible save, but before he could recover, puck ended up on the tape of Johnny Goudreau at the bottom of the right circle and he scored, cementing a 6-5 OT victory for the Blue Jackets.
