efore the 6 minutes mark in the 1st period, with bodies flying in front of the Sharks’ net, Zach Hyman got the pass across to Ryan Nugent Hopkings on the back door for an easy tap in goal. Just over a minute later, at 7:03 of the 1st period, the Oilers’ defender turned over the puck on the back boards behind their goal to Jacob Peterson. Peterson quickly passed to Tomas Hertl in front of the net and he wristed a shot to the far side and tied the game at 1. Before the period was over, Connor McDavid scored with a wrister.
Half way through the 2nd period, San Jose turned over the puck in the neutral zone during a clearing attempt. Zach Hyman got the puck in the right circle. He backskated to the bottom of the right circle and then just skated right in front of the net as none of the Sharks stepped up to challenge him. He backhanded a shot that bounced up off of the stick of Matt Benning into the net and put the Oilers ahead on a 3-1 lead. In the final seconds of the 2nd period, while the Sharks were on a power play, Erik Karlsson turned over the puck in the offensive zone to Derek Ryan which led to a 3 on 1 play for the Oilers. A give and go between Derek Ryan and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ended up in the Sharks net.
Half way through the 3rd period, Philip Broberg got behind the Sharks’ defense and scored with a wrister. Before it was all over, Connor McDavid got a breakaway and roofed a backhand shot to make it 6-2 Oilers.
Tonight the Sharks led in Faceoffs (61%-39%) and Hits (24-21) while the Oilers led in Shots (36-23), Blocked Shots (18-9), Takeaways (12-8) and Giveaways (6-12).
