Women observe fast for well-being of husbands on Hindu festival in northern India

STORY: Women in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state celebrated the Hindu festival of ‘Hartalika Teej’ on Wednesday (September 12) by offering prayers and observing a fast for the well-being of their husbands.

Married and unmarried women in Varanasi city thronged temples to pray for good husbands and the latter for the long life of their husbands while women in Kanpur city offered prayers and danced to mark the celebrations.

A devotee, Ritu said, the difficult fast without food or water was observed for the long life of the husbands which brought good fortune as well.

The festival of ‘Teej’ celebrates the coming of Monsoon season during which women sing, dance and offer prayers for the long life of their husbands. It also celebrates the union of Hindu god, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
