STORY: A temple in India’s southern Chennai city performed a special fire ritual to Hindu god “Varuna” (rain god) for rains on Wednesday (May 08) as the region toils under heat wave and drought-like situation.
Devotees and priests gathered and performed rituals and chanted hymns to the rain god to appease him. Temperature in Chennai is already nearing the the 40 degree mark.
The prayers were organized by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CD) on the request of the Tamil Nadu state government as the city is facing severe water scarcity.
Water is set to get scarcer over May and June as they are the country’s hottest months, though many regions have already registered temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius.
