Sharks win last home game of 2017
Just about 5 minutes into the game, Brent Burns failed to clear a bouncy rebound in the crease that Garnet Hathaway tapped in the net, giving the Calgary Flames a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Joe Pavelski banked a wrister from the slot on a power play and tied the game. With five minutes left in the first period, Joonas Donskoi went to the sin bin for a tripping penalty. On the power play, Flames’ forward Mikael Backlund redirected the shot from Matthew Tkachuk into the net, giving Calgary a 2-1 lead.
There were few chances on both sides and neither team scored in the second period.
Halfway through the third period, Donskoi took his second tripping penalty of the game. The Sharks killed the penalty which gave them some momentum. Just a minute later, Timo Meier tipped a shot from Burns on the blue line and tied the game. Neither team scored on the overtime. Joe Pavelski and Joonas Donskoi scored in the shootout to give the Sharks a 3-2 SO win.
Tonight the Sharks led in face-offs (59%-41%) and giveaways (15-11) while the Flames led in shots (35-34), hits (28-11), blocked shots (23-16) and takeaways (11-10).
