When the Tampa Bay Lightning scores first, they are 8-1-0 this season. Just twenty-five seconds in to the first period, on the first shift of the game, Joonas Donskoi scored from right in front of the goal on a pass from Joe Thornton low in the right circle giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes into the first period, Sharks top defense-man, Brent Burns gets beat and looses stick on a diving poke check, but before things could settle, Jake Dotchin scored with a slap shot and tied the game.
Sharks started the second period on a penalty kill for 33 seconds. Soon after, Nikita Kucherov goes top shelf and takes a 2-1 lead for the Lightning. Five minutes into the second period, Sharks execute their worst power play of the game. Sharks goalie, Martin Jones mishandles the puck behind the net and then ends up taking a penalty for holding the stick. The Sharks again kill the penalty. Seconds later, Lightning top-line forward, Nikita Kucherov back hands an easy goal through five-hole giving the Lightning a 3-1 lead. With less then four minutes left in the second period, the Lightning scored again (leading 4-1) on a bench mix-up during Sharks line change. The wheels fell off the Sharks in the second period.
Sharks backup goalie, Aaron Dell played for the next 20 minutes in the third period. Five minutes into the third period, the Sharks gave up their first power play goal. The Sharks allowed five unanswered goals for the first time this season. This would prove to be too deep of a hole for the Sharks to climb out of. Final score 5-1 Tampa Bay Lightning.
