Sharks power play leads the way with three goals in 5-4 OT win
The Canucks started the scoring early with a drop pass from behind the goal line to the slot for a one-timer. Half-way through the first period, the Sharks drew a penalty. Joe Thornton tied the game on the ensuing power play with a goal from the left circle beating Jacob Markstrom top shelf, short side. With under a minute left in the period, Jannik Hansen checked Sam Gagner who took exception to the play and dropped the gloves.
Just over five minutes into the second period, a tic-tac-toe play that started with Kevin Labanc ended up on Time Meier’s stick for a one-timer that found the back of the net giving the Sharks their first lead of the game. Just a minute later, Thornton scored again on a power play from the left circle beating the goalie top shelf far side, giving the Sharks a 3-1 lead. Past the halfway mark of the second period, Jake Virtanen scored the second Canucks goal of the game with a soft backhand shot that slipped through the five-hole. And with four minutes left in the period, rookie Brock Boeser tied the game on a rebound. But before the period was over, Tomas Hertl scored a goal on a five on three power play to put the Sharks back in the lead.
Just minutes into the third period, Daniel Sedin’s shot hit the post before bouncing off of Aaron Dell’s back into the net and tied the score at 4. With the score tied at the end of regulation, overtime would be required to determine the winner. Joe Thornton made a smart play shooting the puck all the way back into his own end from the offensive zone for a line change, which ultimately allowed Hertl and Labanc to come up the ice with a head of steam. Hertl threw the puck to Labanc in the slot where he fired home a one-timer to win the game.
