Sharks ground the Jets 3-0
Energized from yesterday’s comeback game against the Las Vegas Knights, the San Jose Sharks dominated first fifteen minutes of the game. The Sharks even put one in the net early but no goal due to early whistle. Joe Pavelski drew a penalty half-way through the first period. On the power play, Tim Heed nailed it from the slot on a drop pass from Kevin Labanc to put the Sharks on a 1-0 lead. As the clock winded down, Justin Braun took a shot from the blue line which the goalie blocked but Logan Couture was there to tap in on the rebound giving Sharks a 2-0 lead.
Start of second period, the Winnipeg Jets had changed their goalie from Steve Mason to Connor Hellebuyck. Eight minutes into the second period, the Sharks took their first penalty of the game and killed it without allowing a single shot on goal. The Sharks took two more penalties but this time, they not only killed the penalties but Couture scored a short-handed goal; his second goal of the game and put the Sharks on a 3-0 lead. The Jets outshot the Sharks 16-5 in the second period but the Sharks held onto a 3-0 lead.
The Sharks tightened up their game in the third period and did not give many chances to the Jets. Late in the period, the Jets pulled out their goalie for the sixth player and that’s when Tomas Hertl scored on an empty net. Final score 4-0 Sharks.
Tonight the Sharks led in face-offs (62%-38%), blocked shots (21-14) and giveaways (24-13) while the Jets led in shots (38-34) and hits (27-15).
