Sharks started off sluggish and gave up an early period goal. Just over two minutes into the game, Cale Makar took a non-threatening shot on goal from the blue line. Martin Jones made the initial save but rebound went to his right which Gabriel Bourque tapped into the net. Sharks continued to struggle to find their legs since they had just came off of a physically demanding seven game series against the Golden Knights while the Avalanche had enjoyed a week of rest. Just past fourteen minutes into the game, Logan Couture won an offensive zone faceoff in the left circle to Brent Burns. Burns took couple of steps towards the center and wristed a shot to the short side. Goalie made the save with his left foot but Gustav Nyquist was there to collect the rebound. Nyquist tapped it in past the goalie’s right foot and tied the game at one.
Just over two minutes into the second period, Dylan Gambrell took a tripping penalty which put the Avalanche on a power play. Before the power play was over, Colin Wilson redirected a shot from Mikko Rantanen and into the net. Just a minute later, Brenden Dillon took a four minute high sticking penalty. Sharks were able to kill the penalty which really took the steam out of Colorado. Minutes after that, Marcus Sorensen and Joe Thornton got a two-on-one breakaway with Sorensen on the left. He got a pass across to Thronton in the right circle. Thornton wristed a shot to the short side and tied the game at two. Just six minutes later, Kevin Labanc skated the puck in over the blue line. He went from right to left while stick handling the puck through Rantanen’s legs to the inside of the left circle. Labanc wristed a shot to the far side which put the Sharks on their first lead of the game at 3-2. In the last minute of the second period, Thornton dug the puck off of the back boards to Sorensen who wrapped it around the boards to Burns. Burnzie took a shot, looking for a deflection from Sorensen but it went off of a Colorado player and into the net. Sharks led 4-2. The Sharks held onto the lead through the third period. In the last seconds of the game, Timo Meier scored on an empty net.
