STORY: Residents in parts of India resort to various measures to beat the sweltering heat as mercury soared to over 40 degree Celsius on Thursday (May 09).
People in Lucknow city were seen cooling off by taking a dip in a water body. Others protected themselves with scarves and gulped down coolants to avoid sunburn and dehydration.
“In Lucknow it is very hot. We try not to step out. Only if it is really important we try to come out or else we don’t. To save ourselves from the heat sometimes we drink this bael juice or we eat ice-cream or we drink some cold drinks,” said a local, Mahesh who was seen gulping glasses of bael juice.
In western Gujarat’s Ahmedabad city, residents chose popular summer drink, Chaas (yogurt based drink) to escape the summer heat. One resident said it made him feel reenergized.
While May and June are India’s hottest months – with temperatures regularly pushing above 40 Celsius – meteorologists say the number of days when temperatures approach 45 Celsius has increased in the last 15 years.
