STORY: Potters in northern Uttar Pradesh state are busy preparing earthen lamps or ‘diyas’ these days as Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, is just around the corner and demand for the article goes up during this time of the year.
In holy city of Varanasi, potters are making more than 1,000 lamps in a day to meet the surge in demand.
A potter, Raghurai Parajapati, said since Diwali was approaching their focus was on lamps, otherwise they make clay utensils too.
However, the demand has been steadily decreasing over the years with the advent of cheap and decorative LED lights in the markets.
Diwali marks the return of Hindu god, Lord Rama, to northern Ayodhya city after an exile of 14 years when he defeated Ravana, the powerful king of Lanka.
On this day, people illuminate their houses with different types of lights. Fireworks displays and exchange of gifts with friends and family are an integral part of the festival.
