STORY: At least 17 people were dead and several injured after a speeding bus hit the road divider in northern Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district on Wednesday morning (June 13), local media reported.
An eyewitness said that he saw that the bus driver was speeding and driving recklessly from a distance, adding that the vehicle hit the divider and turned turtle.
The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals while police are conducting an investigation to find out the exact cause of the accident.
Indian Prime Minister expressed his deep anguish over the tragedy.
“My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in a tragic accident in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. I hope those who are injured recover at the earliest: PM @narendramodi,” tweeted Modi’s office.
India has the world’s deadliest roads, with almost 150,000 people killed in accidents in 2015, the latest government data shows.
