STORY: A tribal community in India’s northeastern Imphal city ushered in their Lunar New Year on Sunday (April 07) by offering prayers.
Members of the Meitei community climbed a hill, which is symbolic of elevation of the spirit to reach the almighty, and offered traditional delicacies to the deities to mark the auspicious occasion.
Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba is one of the most important festivals for the community. Devotees, including children, ascend hillocks and offer vegetables, rice, vegetables, and several food items to their deity.
This is followed by men of the house preparing a number of dishes for a special lunch with family, while the women assist them. The meals are traditionally offered and placed in front and rear of the house, which is specially cleaned and decorated with flowers and leaves.
