STORY: India’s contingent of players for the Asian Games was flagged off on Friday (August 10) from capital New Delhi by Sports Minister, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.
Before flagging off over 800-member contingent, Rathore also interacted with the athletes and other sportspersons to boost their morale. India’s 800-plus contingent to Asian Games, to be held from August 18 to September 2 in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang includes 572 athletes.
“Everyone’s attention is on India-it being the best team. Hence, all other teams want to beat us and secure a place in the Olympics,” said ace midfield hockey player, Sardara Singh.
A five-time World Amateur Boxing Champion and Olympic medalist, Mary Kom has pulled out of the competition this year, as she is concentrating on winning gold in the 48kg division at the World Championships to be held here in November, a weight category not available in the Asian Games.
Instead of Mary, her fellow home-state Manipur boxer, Sarjubala Devi will represent India in the women’s 51 kilogram category at the Asiad.
