G20 leaders start first working session of summit

STORY: World leaders came together on Friday (July 7) for a first working session on climate change and energy at the G20 summit in Hamburg.

Before the summit meeting, they stood for group photographs at the venue.

U.S. President Donald Trump decided last month to pull the United States out of the 2015 Paris accord on climate change, saying it would wipe out U.S. jobs.

Climate policy is expected to be a significant bone of contention at the summit that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is hosting on Friday and Saturday.

Trump faces a testy confrontation at the summit with leaders of the other big Group of 20 economies after deciding last month to pull the United States out of the 2015 Paris climate deal.

As the leaders began holding informal meetings, thousands of protesters from around Europe, who say the G20 has failed to solve many of the issues threatening world peace, poured into Hamburg to join the main demonstration.

Dozens of police were injured in clashes with protesters before a G20 summit in Hamburg on Thursday (July 06), tarnishing the start of a meeting Merkel hopes will cement her role as a stateswoman as she seeks re-election in September.
