STORY: France thrashed newbies New Caledonia by a whopping 7-1 scoreline in the group-E opening match of FIFA U-17 World Cup in India’s northeastern city of Guwahati on Sunday (October 08).
Expressing satisfaction with his team’s performance, France’s coach Lionel Rouxel said the difference in level of game play was expected from a newcomer like New Caledonia.
He, at the post-match conference, also said that it was a pleasant sight to see a French territory participating in a world cup event.
Being the stronger of the two, France dominated the game throughout, especially the first half, in which they scored six goals.
New Caledonia managed to score their only goal in the 90th minute.
New Caledonian team coach Dominique Wacalie said the team got its necessary lesson and have now identified their mistakes, which they would rectify in their upcoming matches.
France will now lock horns with Asian giant Japan on October 11 in Guwahati.
