Devotees take part in procession in southern India to mark Hindu festival

Published: August 7, 2018

STORY: Devotees in India’s southern Rameswaram city gathered in huge numbers on Monday (August 06) to take part in a procession on the occasion of a Hindu festival during the ongoing Tamil month of ‘Aadi’.

Priest and devotees chanting prayers and playing musical instruments carried the palanquin of Hindu goddess ‘Parvada Vardhini’, considered by many to be an incarnation of the Hindu goddess and wife of Shiva, Parvati from the Ramanathaswamy temple to pray for the salvation of their ancestors and redeem their sins of the previous birth.

A priest R. Chandrasegarasharma said the procession was considered to be one of the rarest and most auspicious events for the devotees.

The festival is celebrated during the auspicious Tamil month of Aadi in July and August according to Hindu religious calendar.
