STORY: Yemen’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Abdulmalik Abduljalil Al-Mekhlafi, met India’s foreign minister, Sushma Swaraj, in New Delhi on Tuesday (July 11) to boost bilateral ties.
Al-Mekhlafi arrived in India on Tuesday for a four-day visit.
Both the leaders discussed situation in the Middle East, safety of Indians in Yemen and other bilateral issues.
In 2015, Yemen went through a civil war. India had evacuated 6,700 people, including the nationals of 41 countries, under ‘Operation Raahat’.
Yemen has been torn apart by more than two years of civil war that pits the Iranian-aligned Houthi group against the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, which is backed by the Saudi-led alliance. More than 10,000 people have died in the conflict and hunger is widespread.
