Cold wave grips Indian Kashmir

Published: November 29, 2017

STORY: Ladakh region of Indian Kashmir shivered on Wednesday (November 29) with temperatures dipping below zero.

Residents wrapped themselves in multiple layers of clothing and sat around bonfires to keep the chill at bay.

Night temperatures in Ladakh, one of India’s coldest regions, can dip to as low as -30 degrees Celsius. Water streams and rivers have started to freeze already. Residents said they have to light fires under taps in morning and evening to be able to get the water out.

Reportedly, Ladakh’s Leh town recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.7 on Tuesday (November 28) night against Monday’s (November 27) minus 7.3, while Kargil district recorded a minus 4.0 against a minus 6.4. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the current dry spell to continue till Saturday (December 02) or Sunday (December 03)

While winter temperatures in South Asia are mild compared to Europe, they can at times prove deadly in India, where thousands of homeless live in shacks without any heating arrangements.
