STORY: Police in India’s northern Kanpur city on Thursday (May 11) arrested three persons for running cricket betting rackets and seized 490,000 rupees ($7,600) from their possession.
Acting on a tip off, the police arrested the trio during a raid at a city hotel for allegedly betting in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.
Four mobile phones were also recovered from their possession
Cricket betting is illegal in India and in the past the game has suffered a lot due to gambling, which some experts say should be legalized to prevent the spoils being spent on criminal activity and to generate revenue for the government.
