STORY: An artificial skating rink in India’s northern hill town of Shimla is offering consolation to tourists disappointed by lack of snowfall this season in the Himalayan region.
Tourists from across India have been thronging the ice rink in Kufri, a popular hill station famous for ski slopes and beautiful landscapes. The skating rink is thrown open mid-November and sees a steady rush of skating enthusiasts through the winter season, before being used as a swimming pool in summer.
The skating rink helps lift the spirits of people who expected a white Christmas and New Year’s Eve but were left waiting, said owner of the skating rink, Nishant Nag, on Tuesday (January 09).
Ice skating is popular in Himalayan regions of India like Kashmir and Shimla where sub-zero temperatures cause water bodies to freeze. Much of India has a tropical climate, hence ice sports are limited to the few artificial rinks available. Tourism is a major contributor to Himachal Pradesh’s economy, with winter activities such as snowboarding, skating, sledge rides and snow skiing being major draws for tourists.
