After Erasing 3 Goal Deficit San Jose Sharks Lose 5-4 in OT to Winnipeg Jets
Tonight, on the very first shift of the game, a shot from Nikolaj Ehlers deflected off of Mathieu Perreault’s skate into the Sharks net, giving the Jets an early 1-0 lead. On the very next shot from the Jets’ forward bounced off of a Sharks’ defense man onto the tape Joel Armia for an easy goal. Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse for the Sharks, Tomas Hertl laid a hard hit on Jets’ defense man Dmitry Kulikov, behind the net giving him a nose bleed. Hertl got 5 minutes major for boarding and a game misconduct. On the ensuing power play, Bryan Little scored for the Jets putting the Sharks on 3-0 deficit just past the half way mark of the first period. Just as the clock was winding down for the period, a bouncy puck found its way on to the tape of Captain Joe Pavelski, low in the slot, and he wrists a rocket to the far side top shelf to open up scoring for the Sharks.
The Sharks continued their momentum in the second period. Half way through the second period, Logan Couture spun around 360 degrees and tapped in a bouncy puck to cut the deficit to just one goal. The Jets took a couple of sloppy penalties and the Sharks capitalized when Chris Tierney unloaded a one-timer from the right circle on a feed from Joe Thornton and tied the game.
Both teams scored one additional goal in the third period but the game ended tied at four. On the very first shift of the overtime, Brent Burns left Dustin Byfuglien open behind the Sharks net and he threaded a needle to wide open Bryan Little for a one-timer and he scored taking a 5-4 OT victory for the Jets.
Tonight the Sharks led in shots (33-23) while the Jets led in face-offs (53%-47%), hits (26-25), blocked shots (23-21), takeaways (9-2) and giveaways (11-7).
